Tweet blocked in China

Filed in: Technology - Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm

BLOCKED:

1) photo-sharing site Flickr.com

2) search engines Livesearch.com

3) Bing.com (Microsoft’s answer to Google)

4) Hotmail

5) Twitter.com.

6) Video-sharing site YouTube

7) blogger portals WordPress and Blogspot

Solution: VPN

Many of the Chinese on Twitter were quickly back to tweeting as normal within minutes of the new block, logging on through virtual private networks to go around the censors. However, less web-savvy Chinese (and those unable to afford the cost of a VPN) will no longer be able to read what they write. Nor will they be able to see pictures posted on Flickr, or use their Hotmail accounts.

“Some users said it was still possible to use Twitter through certain software applications such as Seesmic that allow users to send and receive messages without directly using the Twitter.com Web site”
